Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables
- 1½ pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut (or frozen green beans, thawed)
Sauce
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Topping
- 1 cup crispy fried onions
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the green beans: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then blanch the green beans for 4–5 minutes until just tender. Drain the beans thoroughly and set aside.
- Make the sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and evenly blended.
- Assemble the casserole: Add the blanched green beans to the sauce and gently stir until all the beans are coated. Transfer this mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 20 minutes, allowing it to heat through and become bubbly.
- Add topping: Remove the casserole from the oven and evenly sprinkle the crispy fried onions and optional shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
- Finish baking: Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the topping turns golden brown and crispy. Remove from oven and serve warm.
Notes
- You can use fresh or thawed frozen green beans depending on availability.
- Adding shredded cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice melty, cheesy layer under the crispy onions.
- Ensure to drain the green beans thoroughly after blanching to avoid a watery casserole.
- For a deeper mushroom flavor, consider adding sautéed mushrooms to the sauce.
- To make the casserole ahead, assemble it without the topping and refrigerate; add the topping before baking.
