Ingredients
Scale
Caramelized Onions
- 1 large yellow onion
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon beef bouillon granules
- 1/4 cup sour cream
Burgers
- 1 pound ground beef (85% ground chuck recommended)
- 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Assembly
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices Provolone cheese
- Green leaf lettuce, as desired
- Regular potato chips (optional)
- Dill pickles (optional)
- Barbecue sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Thinly slice the yellow onion. Melt butter in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and stir to coat them evenly with the melted butter. Cover the pan with a lid slightly ajar to allow steam to escape. Stir the onions every few minutes and cook for about 15 minutes until they become golden brown and caramelized.
- Prepare the Burger Patties: While the onions are cooking, place the ground beef in a large bowl. Sprinkle the Lipton onion soup mix evenly over the meat and crack the egg on top. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Using clean hands, thoroughly mix all ingredients until well combined. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- Grill the Burgers: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 6 to 7 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Place a slice of Provolone cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt slightly. Once cooked, transfer the burgers to a platter and cover to keep warm.
- Finish the Onions: Mix the water and beef bouillon granules together and pour this mixture over the caramelized onions. Turn the heat to high and simmer until most of the liquid evaporates. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the sour cream until fully incorporated, creating a creamy onion topping.
- Assemble the Burgers: Place each cheeseburger on the bottom half of a hamburger bun. Top with desired amounts of caramelized onion mixture and green leaf lettuce. Add optional toppings such as barbecue sauce, dill pickles, and potato chips for extra crunch and flavor. Cover with the top bun and serve warm.
Notes
- For best flavor, use ground chuck with 85% lean meat to keep the burgers juicy.
- Adjust cooking times based on your grill’s heat and preferred doneness.
- Optional toppings like potato chips add a delightful crunch to the burger.
- Keep the lid tilted when caramelizing onions to allow moisture to escape and promote browning.
- You can substitute Provolone cheese with Swiss or Gruyère for a different twist.
