Scale
Main Ingredients
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup butterscotch chips
- 3 cups crispy chow mein noodles
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Optional Add-ins
- 1/2 cup roasted peanuts (optional)
- Colorful sprinkles (optional)
- Mini marshmallows (optional)
- Shredded coconut (optional)
- Crushed pretzels (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the Chips: Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips and butterscotch chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until the mixture is smooth and fully melted. Alternatively, melt the chips using a double boiler over low heat to prevent burning.
- Add Flavorings: Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to the melted chocolate mixture. This will balance the sweetness and enhance the overall flavor depth of your haystack treats.
- Incorporate Noodles: Gently fold the crispy chow mein noodles into the chocolate mixture, taking care not to crush them so that the treats remain light and crunchy.
- Add Optional Mix-ins: If desired, fold in optional ingredients such as roasted peanuts, mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, or colorful sprinkles to add extra texture and flavor.
- Shape the Haystacks: Line a tray or baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a spoon, drop small mounds of the mixture evenly spaced on the parchment to form individual haystacks.
- Set the Treats: Allow the haystacks to set at room temperature until firm, or speed up the process by refrigerating them for 15 to 30 minutes until completely hardened.
- Serve or Store: Once firm, serve the haystack treats immediately, or store them in an airtight container to enjoy later. They keep well at room temperature or refrigerated.
Notes
- For best texture, avoid stirring the chow mein noodles too vigorously to keep them intact.
- Customize these treats with your favorite mix-ins such as nuts, dried fruit, or candies.
- Store haystacks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or refrigerate for longer freshness.
- Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Melting chocolate slowly and gently helps prevent it from seizing or burning.
