Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables
- 1 large head cabbage (shredded or roughly chopped)
- 1 large onion (diced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes (do not drain)
Meat & Broth
- 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 lean for best flavor)
- 1/4 cup beef broth
Seasonings
- 1.5 tbsp Italian seasoning
- Salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare ingredients: Shred or roughly chop the cabbage, dice the onion, and mince the garlic cloves so everything is ready to go.
- Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet or pan over medium heat, brown the ground beef until it is fully cooked and no longer pink, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- Sauté onion and garlic: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan with the ground beef and cook until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
- Add cabbage and seasonings: Stir in the shredded cabbage, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Cook for a few minutes until the cabbage begins to soften.
- Add tomatoes and broth: Pour in the canned diced tomatoes with their juice and the beef broth. Mix everything to combine well.
- Simmer the mixture: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let everything simmer for about 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and flavors are well melded.
- Adjust seasoning and serve: Taste the dish and adjust salt and pepper as needed. Serve hot as a comforting main course.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and juiciness.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer uncovered for the last 10 minutes to reduce liquid.
- This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.
- For added spice, consider adding red pepper flakes when cooking the onions.
- Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days and can be reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
