Description

This homemade ground beef and cabbage recipe is a hearty and comforting one-pot meal perfect for a cozy dinner. Combining savory ground beef, tender cabbage, and rich tomatoes with fragrant Italian seasoning, it’s a flavorful, nutritious dish that’s easy to prepare and sure to satisfy your cravings.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 large head cabbage (shredded or roughly chopped)
  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes (do not drain)

Meat & Broth

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 lean for best flavor)
  • 1/4 cup beef broth

Seasonings

  • 1.5 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Shred or roughly chop the cabbage, dice the onion, and mince the garlic cloves so everything is ready to go.
  2. Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet or pan over medium heat, brown the ground beef until it is fully cooked and no longer pink, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  3. Sauté onion and garlic: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan with the ground beef and cook until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add cabbage and seasonings: Stir in the shredded cabbage, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Cook for a few minutes until the cabbage begins to soften.
  5. Add tomatoes and broth: Pour in the canned diced tomatoes with their juice and the beef broth. Mix everything to combine well.
  6. Simmer the mixture: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let everything simmer for about 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and flavors are well melded.
  7. Adjust seasoning and serve: Taste the dish and adjust salt and pepper as needed. Serve hot as a comforting main course.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and juiciness.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer uncovered for the last 10 minutes to reduce liquid.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.
  • For added spice, consider adding red pepper flakes when cooking the onions.
  • Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days and can be reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
