Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
Wet Ingredients
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Other
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Prepare the batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until combined. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk and vanilla extract, mixing well. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until a smooth batter forms without lumps.
- Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep fryer or a heavy pot to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches approximately 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer for accuracy to ensure proper frying temperature.
- Form and fry the bites: Using a spoon or piping bag, carefully drop or pipe small bite-sized portions of batter into the hot oil. Fry the bites in batches to avoid overcrowding, cooking for about 2 to 3 minutes per batch or until they are golden brown and crispy, flipping as needed to brown evenly.
- Drain excess oil: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried funnel cake bites from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Finish and serve: Once slightly cooled but still warm, dust the funnel cake bites generously with powdered sugar. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Maintain the oil temperature between 350°F and 375°F for ideal frying; too low will make the bites greasy, too high may burn them.
- Use a piping bag for more uniform bites, or a spoon for rustic shapes.
- For added flavor, sprinkle cinnamon sugar instead of powdered sugar.
- Serve with dipping sauces like chocolate or caramel for an extra treat.
- Leftovers can be reheated in a toaster oven to retain crispness but are best eaten fresh.
