Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cups Swiss cheese, shredded
- 1 cup milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) to prepare it for baking the casserole.
- Cook beef and vegetables: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef along with the sliced mushrooms and chopped onion until the beef is browned and the mushrooms and onions are soft and tender. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Prepare egg mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined to create a flavorful custard base for the casserole.
- Layer first half: Grease a casserole dish and begin layering by spreading half of the cooked beef and vegetable mixture evenly on the bottom, then sprinkle half of the shredded Swiss cheese on top, followed by half of the breadcrumbs.
- Add egg mixture: Pour half of the egg and milk mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the casserole dish, allowing it to soak through.
- Repeat layers: Repeat the layering process with the remaining beef mixture, Swiss cheese, breadcrumbs, and pour the remaining egg mixture over the top.
- Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the casserole is set in the middle and the top is golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Cool before serving: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes to allow it to firm up for easier serving and enhanced flavor.
Notes
- Use fresh mushrooms for best flavor and texture.
- Drain excess fat from the cooked beef to avoid a greasy casserole.
- You can substitute the breadcrumbs with crushed crackers or panko for different texture.
- Letting the casserole rest after baking helps it hold together when served.
- To make this dish gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
